Embracing the Coming Downtime

November 10, 2022 Things are slowing down around here as we ease into winter and more time spent on indoor activities like reading while huddled under a cozy blanket.  Right now I am reading the biography written by Flea, Acid for the Children.  Wanna know why I’m reading this book?  I saw it on the shelf in an airport bookstore last month and the title made me chuckle.  Why not?  I love books and it’s not often that I come across a book that is a boring waste of time so I trust my instincts in the books I select.  So far, it’s well…

Planning Our Dope Ass Winter

November 3, 2022 My friend here Amanda really got my week off to a great start.  She invited me out on some short hikes to see pictographs in the area. We started out by visiting Kiva coffee house just before they closed for the season.  I had a fine latte and a tasty turkey sandwich, but perhaps best of all is the amazing view they have out their backdoor.   Amazingly, Amanda was the person I had the most difficulty with forming a relationship with at first, but she is really a warm, funny, and caring person and I’m blessed to have become friends…

Our Incredible Changing Landscape

October 27, 2022  I tend to get really excited about little things…really whatever interests me at any particular time.  For the past couple of weeks, I was reading that excellent book, Born to Run and I became excited about the idea that I could cure my years long trouble with plantar fasciitis by walking barefoot or in cheap non orthopedic shoes.  I finished the book at the beginning of this week and decided I had all the knowledge I needed to run an experiment.  After one day at work without my insoles I limped home feeling like I had been punched in the heel…

It’s a Fall Slowdown Week

October 20, 2022 This week I took it a little slower.  I finished working on the backlog of photos I needed to edit and enjoyed some extra reading while getting caught up on chores.  Here are some of my keepers from my trip to Willis Creek Narrows last week.  There is always something captivating about a lone tree.       I’m beginning to make friends with more of the newer workcampers here.  Cohesion is forming in our bonding process with the current crew.  It feels nice.  Most of those working here right now say they will be back in the Spring for the…

Oh the Places You Can Go With a Three Day Weekend

October 13, 2022 I’ve been consistently working 4 day workweeks for a while and I think this is the right amount of days to work.  It leaves you with one day to tackle chores and errands, one day to spend with family or friends, and one day just for you to spend time on a hobby or project, or just relax and do nothing at all.  Sometimes though, even three days off does not always feel like enough.  The weather is perfect here and on days off when I go out exploring, I wish I could do so every day.   On my days…

Pando, the Largest and Oldest Living Organism on Earth

October 6, 2022 In the last blog I talked mostly about how wonderful it is to visit your old hometown and see all of your loved ones.  Well it also feels wonderful to return to my home, husband, and dogs.  I returned to busy season at the campground.  Yonder has hired Luke to shoot some reels for them so we started work on this by spending a morning shooting scenes at the lodge, in the drive-in, and the outdoor showers.  Luke was able to get some good footage, but not everything he wanted as there were too many people milling about.  It will be…

Wherever the Road Takes You, Be Sure it Takes You Home Once in a While

September 27, 2022 So I did get a bit off track with my blog schedule.  I fretted about this for a moment, but then came to the conclusion that this probably only really mattered to me and it really wasn’t that big of a deal if I missed a week and then wrote the next one late.  So here’s what has transpired in the past two weeks:  Luke and I found a new dirt road to ramble down.  We went for several miles through a really beautiful canyon with some slickrock formations as well as chinle hills.  At points, the road merged with the…

Nudes in the Desert and Exploring Hole in the Rock

September 12, 2022 Last week I hinted at a daring photoshoot I was doing with the girls here.  It happened and it went better than I could have ever imagined.  Many many years ago I saw and was captivated by a photo I saw captured by Herb Ritts.  He famously took beautiful black and white portraits and this particular one was popular in the late 90’s and caught my eye.  I asked some of my friends here at the campground if they would like to go out into the desert to try to recreate this image with me.  We all agreed to have Luke…

Scorpions, Star Trails, and Crumb Cake Oh My!

September 5, 2022 We had some mini adventures this week of sleeping away from home.  It was a nice little get-away from our lovely RV.  Last Monday night, Luke picked me up from work early and surprised me with a campsite he had set up at our new favorite spot that we call Spencer Flats or Spencer Pocket, but maybe it has a more official name we are just unfamiliar with.  It was already dark when we arrived, but we had our headlamps and black light flashlight for spotting scorpions.  Wouldn’t ya know, we saw one of those suckers right away!  They really do…
