For the last few months, we've been stationary in Escalante Utah. Jenn has been workamping here at a campground in exchange for a site and hookups. It's the longest we've been stationary in one area, so we've had a good bit of time to explore. <br /><br />Escalante and it's surrounding towns do not disappoint. The roads here are scenic byways, including UT RT 12, which is designated an "All American Road". <br /><br />In this video, we explore around UT12, Hell's Backbone Road, Hole in the Rock Road, and random dirt roads. Utah State Road 12, or Scenic Byway 12 is designated an All-American Road.<br /><br />That's not just a cute thing people say, it's an actual federal designation.<br />A scenic byway is recognized by the US Department of Transportation for having one of 6 intrinsic qualities. <br />Those qualities are "archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, and scenic". <br /><br />An All-American Road however, must have at least 2 of those qualities and contain features that don't exist anywhere else in the United States. <br />There are 31 All-American Roads.<br /><br />Highway 12 runs 122 miles through The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It's not really what you would think of as a monument - this is huge. Almost 2 million acres huge. This monument is almost twice the size of all of Utah's 5 National Parks - or about the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. <br /><br />It is massive.<br /><br />The Grand Staircase is named after the layers of rock that form what looks like a staircase. <br />The Chocolate Cliffs, The Vermilion Cliffs, The White Cliffs, The Gray Cliffs, and the Pink Cliffs. <br />All of these layers of rock are formed by different types of sediment, from different eras.<br /><br />The bottom step of the Grand Staircase is the oldest, made of Kaibab limestone 200 million years ago. It's the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. <br />The next layer, vermillion, was made of deposited silt and desert dunes 175 million years ago. This is The Wave, White Pocket. <br />The White Cliffs from 150 million years ago are made of Navajo Sandstone - from sand dunes, these are the epic cliffs of Zion National Park.<br />The Grey Cliffs, which is where we found some of the best dinosaur fossils - are made up of cretaceous shale (very old mud) and sandstone from 130 million years ago. <br />The Pink Cliffs - where we are now, are the bright orange hoodoos of Bryce National Park, it's (only) 60 million years old, made of eroding Claron Formation limestones. <br /><br />So basically, the sediment from a prehistoric lake environment on top of a river environment, on top of a desert environment, on top of a river environment on top of an ocean environment... climbing to 9600 feet above sea level.<br /><br />It's several chapters of the Earth's history with it's pages slowly being turned by the forces of erosion. Rain falls on the pink cliffs, the highest point of the staircase - and it works it's way down. It grows into flash floods quickly, that carry boulders and tree trunks violently through narrow canyons, smashing into walls and carving even deeper canyons eventually dumping into the Colorado River. The same Colorado River that carved the giant gash in the Earth big enough to be seen from space that we call The Grand Canyon. The water then freezes and cracks, splits, and weakens the exposed stone walls... and then it thaws and starts again - carrying snowmelt and more broken stone to chisel the landscape and uncover new secrets.<br /><br />Highway 12, completed in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps overlooks all of this. <br /><br />The road is paved and well maintained. It is incredible to think about how it was made and how difficult and dangerous that must have been in an area this rugged and desolate. This is not a place people have ever come on the way to anywhere else. You have to want to get here. The land is impossibly difficult and the weather is offensive. They didn't have air conditioning in 1940s when this road was built. The Escalante River here, in fact, is the last river to have been mapped in the United States. We mapped the rivers of Alaska before top of the Grand Staircase. That's how remote this place is.<br /><br />At one point, the road passes over the crest of Hogback Ridge. <br />At times the road here is as narrow as the ridge itself, with very steep edges where a fall would no doubt immediately result in certain death. <br />There's no room for guardrails on The Hogback.<br />This is America.<br /><br />It's hard to articulate in words, in photos, or even in video how beautiful and awe-inspiring this landscape is, and this is just the side of the road. <br /><br />#utah #landscapes #grandstaircaseescalante

Our new friends Chad and Cindy brought us on a ride on their SxS through some deep sand up into Peek-a-boo slot canyon in Kanab, UT this afternoon. Slot canyons are super cool. When the sun hits them just right it’s a pretty magical experience, but you have to be careful.

With even just a little rain rushing through these canyons it would be easy to get yourself stuck in a James Franco 127 hours situation. I personally don’t want to cut off my own arm with a swiss army knife if I can help it.

We meet some interesting people out here on the road and our neighbors here in Utah have a Talon Side by Side. We had to take them up on it the second they offered us a ride, and now I want a SxS.

We had the opportunity to visit the Tuscon Rodeo in Arizona, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros. Let me tell you, there is something compelling about watching a grown man jump off a moving animal onto another moving animal and wrestle it to the ground.

How to get fast RV internet in 2022 using the gear you probably already have. The most common questions we get relating to Full Time RV Living are "what's the best rv internet" and "what WIFI is best". White Sands National Park is one of the coolest places in America. We're Luke and Jenn MacNeil, MacNeil's on Wheels. We travel the country full time in our 36 foot making content of some of the most beautiful places in the country. White Sands is located in Alamogordo New Mexico and is full of sweeping views of this incredible white gypsum sand. You can even stop by the visitor center and get a sled to go ripping through the dunes.

It's one of our favorite places.

It's a tiny little slice of Americana just north of the Mexico border. Travelers here enjoy vast mountainous overlooks, offroad sports, horseback riding, mountain biking, birdwatching, and hunting.

AWESOME FREE Camping around Sonoita and Elgin Arizona at the Cieneguita Camping Area in Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Join us as we explore the area for campsites. This is boondocking at its finest!

The Las Ciengas is about 45 miles Southeast of Tuscon. The camping areas we explored are between Sonoita and Elgin. This area is a unique oasis as the Cienega Creek runs year round whereas many of the streams and washes in the desert are bone dry except for right after infrequent rain.
Cienegas are marshes that occur along the length of this creek and offer life to rare vegetation for the Southwest. This is the transition zone between the Sonoran Desert and the Chihuahuan Desert and is bounded by separate mountain ranges in each direction.

There are over 45,000 acres of grass and woodlands here in these hills that connect the “sky island” mountain ranges in this region.
